The Full Story

Hello!

My name is Maj! That of course is not my real name. but that is the name that stuck.

When I was five years old, my mother owned a consignment shop in downtown Salisbury, North Carolina. One day, she brought me an old Houdini's magic set. I was immediately hooked and bitten by the magic bug as they say. I may have been a bit younger than five years old because I remember my mother having to read the instructions to me so that I could learn the cups and balls. Well, because I could not read at the time, I put the kit aside for a good long while.

When I was about nine or ten years old, I met a local magician at the mall who would come during craft shows with his wife and he would put on three or four magic shows a day during the craft show. He sold balloons and magic tricks and my grandmother bought me one of his deluxe sets. We became friends but he was not in town often enough to become my mentor.

Then when I was thirteen it happened. I found a local magician running a magic booth at the local flea market. He shot me in the eye with a squirting nickel and I knew he was the one. My mentor! He was there every weekend and so was I. We have been meeting religiously every week ever since. I am now 40 years old at the time of this writing and he has taught me everything he knows about magic!

Eventually he helped me book birthday parties, school and church shows, a restaurant gig here or there, and just fun shows in our back yards for family and friends. I was off! I even got into dove magic for a while! He and my second mentor, my mentor's friend, sponsored me and I joined the International Brotherhood of Magicians in 2003. Eventually I competed in their closeup competition at the Winter Carnival of Magic in Pigeon Forge TN and won third place People's Choice!
